How your central heater works

The majority of residential central-heating systems are fueled by natural gas or oil; some, however, are powered by electricity and it is with those that we are concerned here. (Gas- or oil-fired furnaces are best left to someone licensed to handle those systems. The dangers involved are very real —so much so that, in many areas of the country, it is illegal to work on one without the proper certification.) As a rule, the heat is automatically controlled by means of a thermostat, just as most air-conditioning units are. When the temperature goes below the thermostat setting, the bimetallic contact strip energizes an electrical circuit which turns on the heating elements and blowers. Once the temperature reaches the setting on the thermostat dial, the thermostat automatically turns off the source of heat.

There are two basic types of electric heating systems: gravity warm-air and forced warm-air. Gravity systems operate on the principle that hot air rises, since it is lighter than cooler air. A gravity system works efficiently only in homes with basements, or in multi-story buildings, where the central heater is below the normal living level. The heating elements generate heat when electrical energy passes through their coils, and the hot air then rises through ducts. Usually the air movement is augmented by fans. During the upward heat movement, warm air displaces the colder air, which then drifts downward through a series of "cold air ducts" until it reaches the lower part of the central element, where it is heated and again repeats the same cycle. Gravity warm-air devices are used in floor furnaces and some space heating systems. Several smaller heating elements and associated blowers are placed either under the floor or at the baseboard of the area to be heated.

The biggest shortcoming of gravity systems is that there must be a large temperature difference between the upward-moving hot air and the cold air it is to displace in order to create good air movement and equal distribution of heat throughout the home.
Forced warm-air heaters utilize a blower to force air from the heating element through the duct work and registers into individual rooms. Use of this system minimizes the temperature differential between the warm air from the heater and the cold air leaving rooms through return vents. The forced air system allows users to control whole house heating, and to have better control over the heating to individual rooms and areas. Often the building is divided into segments, with each area having its own thermostat and individual blower or auxiliary fan support system.

Repair and maintenance of an electric heating system is simple. Some systems have emergency switches, as well as a standard service entrance fuse or breaker. The emergency switch for an electric furnace is a wall switch close to the heater, and it is generally red. When the heater fails to operate, first check that no one has accidentally turned this switch off. If all switches, fuses and breakers are working, try moving the thermostat up a few degrees. If the thermostat has a day and night setting with a timer, take off the thermostat cover and check the dial to see if a power failure or some accident may have caused the timer to get out of cycle. While this cover is off, check the thermostat contact points. Dirt or corrosion on the bimetallic contact points could keep the heater from being energized. To clean these contacts, pass a business card or a crisp, fresh dollar bill between them.

HOW A DRYER WORKS

An electric or gas dryer is one of the simplest appliances in your home. It consists of little more than a motor to spin the drum, a heater element to supply the heat for drying, and a timer to control the length of time of operation. The simplest units have a timer that signals both the motor and the heating element when to start and when to stop. Many dryers also have a cool down cycle, during which the motor keeps going but the heating element is shut off. This allows the clothes to cool and fluff. In a dryer, hot air absorbs moisture, is vented away, and new air is drawn in, heated and gets vented away in its turn. Most often a small fan is used to force air movement. This fan is generally doing two jobs at once. A part of it pulls in new air and pushes it through the ducting across the heating element and into the drum. Another part of it pulls air out of the drum, across the lint filter, and out through the exhaust duct. As the clothes tumble in the drum, more surface area is exposed to the warmed and moving air.

The tumbling action is further increased by blades inside the drum. A motor is attached to the drum, usually through some form of pulley and belt system. (The same motor is usually used to drive the blower fan for air circulation.) The amount of heat and length of drying time is often determined by a timer mechanism. If the dryer has a cool down period, the timer will have two sets of contacts in it one for the motor and one for the heating element. If both go on and off together, a single set of contacts is used. More sophisticated units actually measure the wetness of the clothes in the drum, usually via contacts inside the drum. Since water conducts electricity, as the clothes touch the contacts a low current pulse keeps the dryer operating. The drier the clothes become, the less current they conduct; when dry, they do not conduct at all, and the dryer can shift into the cool down cycle. All dryers have a thermostat somewhere in the circuit.

In many cases, if the dryer doesn't doing the job properly there is a reason for the failure. Perhaps the lint trap isn't being cleaned often enough. Or the high-limit thermostat might not be working and is allowing the element to overheat on a regular basis. Many people clean out the lint trap religiously but forget that the exhaust duct itself can become filled with lint. (Take a look outside where the vent comes out. After a relatively short time you'll find a layer of lint.) On a regular basis (every six months or so) clean out the exhaust duct. This will not only let the dryer operate more efficiently, it can also increase the life of the unit, and will even serve well in protecting your home from a fire hazard.

The electric dryer requires a 240-volt outlet and always must have its own circuit.
A dryer should be stored only in the upright position. When moving them, even a short distance, keep them as upright as possible, and with as little jostling as possible.

All of the above tips are for informational purposes only. For your safety, we strongly encourage any gas or electric dryers repairs to be performed only by a certified technician. Don't call a Repairman, Call a Specialist!

HOW YOUR OVEN WORKS

Because most homes receive a 240-volt supply from the utility company, and this input voltage comes from a center-tapped transformer, the grounding is essential for safety and to meet building/electrical codes. With a center-tapped transformer, there is 120 volts from the grounded center tap to one end of the transformer coil, and another 120 volts from the center tap to the other end. (Usually the total service availability is from 100 to 200 amps, depending on your location and on the age of the home.)
The 240 volts available for oven and air conditioning operation is provided by wiring from one end of the input utility transformer to the other. Improper grounding could result in a 120-volt "live" voltage potential between the metal parts of the range and the metal handle of a refrigerator or some other nearby 120-volt appliance. With bare wet feet, a user touching both appliances at the same time would be electrocuted.
Exhaust venting is necessary to remove both heat and odor. Smoke from the overcooking of greasy food is not only offensive, but can also stain walls and other interior surfaces. And during the hot summer, the exhaust vent helps keep kitchen temperatures at a tolerable level. A stove should not be located in the direct path of air flow from an air conditioning or central heating register vent, since a flow of heated or cooled air moving across cooking utensils can drastically affect the time required to cook most foods.
If moving a range, at least a partial disassembly is recommended. The glass-paneled oven doors should be removed and packed separately, just as carefully as you would crate up fine china. Plug-in surface cleaning elements should also be removed. Use heavy masking tape to tape in place all knobs and switches. It is far safer to crate up the range in the same carton in which it was originally purchased.

SELF-CLEANING OVENS

The first time you have to clean an oven you start wondering if maybe humanity shouldn't go back to eating raw foods. Disguise it as the manufacturers may, even the best oven cleaners smell terrible and are unpleasant to use.
As an answer to this problem, oven manufacturers have come out with two different ways to make an oven self-cleaning. The basic idea is simple —the food is burned away so that nothing is left. This can be accomplished by either using a catalyst that causes the food to decompose at normal cooking temperatures, or by generating enough heat so that the food decomposes on its own. Hence the two methods —catalytic and pyrolytic (pyro means "fire"). A catalytic self-cleaning oven has a special surface on the oven walls. This surface is rough, to increase the total surface area, and it is also dark, to increase the effective temperature. This kind of oven basically cleans itself every time it is used.

Because it is so uncomplicated and cost effective, the catalytic self-cleaning systems are probably the most common today. The two major drawbacks are that the surface is rather delicate and that cleaning is often incomplete. Quite often, and especially with spills, a manual precleaning is required for the system to work at all.
Pyrolytic self-cleaning units have a special setting on the control knob. When you flip this knob to "clean," the temperature in the unit will climb to somewhere between 800 and 900 F, or about twice the normal cooking temperature.
To withstand these temperatures, the unit must have some special features. There is extra insulation in the unit walls and also various mechanisms to keep the high temperature under control. For a pyrolytic system to work safely, the unit door must remain closed. If you open the door to an unit that is baking at 400 F, the wave of heat can hurt a bit, but probably won't do any real damage to you. Open that same unit door at 900 F and you're in for an instant and nasty burn. To protect the owner, the doors on an unit that uses the pyrolytic system have an auxiliary motor that cranks the door tightly shut and keeps it shut until the temperature has dropped to a safe level. This is just one of the features that further complicates the unit. Except for the various cleaning features and related parts (if any), troubleshooting of self-cleaning units is about the same as any other unit.

All of the above tips are for informational purposes only. For your safety, we strongly encourage any oven repairs to be performed only by a certified technician.  Don't call a Repairman, Call a Specialist!
